Winter time is perfect for DIY projects!
Tear yourself away from Netflix, roll up your sleeves, and get old-fashioned with us for a minute. It’ll be fun, and you can totally brag about it later.
If you read our last blog, you’ve learned a thing or two about the benefits of aromatherapy. As promised, we’re going to help you get a little crafty and take it to the next level.
We’re going to make candles you guys. And it’s going to be rad. Here we go!
Before Step #1
Okay do you want to do this the easy way (no judgment) or really dive in and make all the things from scratch? Your candles start with choosing an essential oil, and then either making it all by yourself (praise queen) or purchasing some high-quality botanicals from your nearest all-natural food store or Amazon. Respect either way. You are MAKING CANDLES.
To make essential oils from scratch, be warned: it’s going to take several days to make the magic happen. Things need to marinate and get all aroma-awesome-y.
Okay seriously Step #1:
Choose your scent! (These are some of our favorites; we even included some of them in our products! Read the last post for details.)
Making your own essential oils
This is where you either go to the store or go all in. If you’re ride-or-die, grab a handful/cupful of your herbal, and submerge it in olive oil. Cover and let it hang out for a day or two, strain, and press. Now submerge it in oil again, and wait another day. You’re going to repeat this until the scent is as potent as your heart desires, and then store your homemade essential oil in a sealed glass container; in a cool, dark place.
Ingredients for making your own candles:
- Essential oils (duh)
- Cotton wicks
- Can to melt oils
- Wooden spoon or stick to stir
- Cooking pot
- Mason jars
- PS: You can do this!
Steps for making your own candles:
- Fill pot 2/3 with water, bring to a boil
- Put beeswax in can, and put can in water; until beeswax is melted
- Cut wicks to fit mason jars, and tape end of wick around a pencil (Place pencil over top of jar, so wick dangles below)
- When wax is melted, remove can from water, and stir in a few drops of your favorite essential oil (Add more or less depending on what you like. Your nose knows!)
- Pour wax mixture into mason jars
- Allow to cool
OMG you just made candles!!!
