Starting your own business or franchise requires a nudge (or push) out of your comfort zone, and trying something completely new. Being your own boss means you’re ultimately responsible for all of your business’ issues and challenges, but it also means having total control of your future and achievements.
We talked to iTAN Franchisee Erin Naanee who gave us some boss babe insight on why owning a franchise can be a step toward entrepreneurial success.
1. Why did you decide to pursue a franchise? How did you come to that decision?
I always knew I wanted to be a business owner. However, getting into business can be intimidating; especially when you’re not well-versed in a specific industry.
Prior to joining iTAN, I owned tanning salons which I later converted into an iTAN franchise. Being a part of a franchise gave me the opportunity to get into business confidently by joining a proven, successful business model. I knew what I could learn and gain from joining a franchise coupled with support and guidance would supersede going to business on my own.
2. What was the first step in finding a franchise that’s right for you?
You don’t need to be an expert in the franchise you’re interested in. However, it was crucial for me to find a franchise that aligned with my values and beliefs. Your business reflects who you are. Finding a franchise that mimics your core values and what is important to you will provide a business that you are proud to work hard for.
3. Why did you decide to get involved with iTAN Franchising, Inc.? Were you interested or already involved in the tanning industry? What peaked your interest?
After one of my first tanning salon visits, I was immediately intrigued and quickly envisioned myself getting into the industry.
Fast forward 12 years, I own and operate three tanning salon locations that I converted into an iTAN franchise. Being that iTAN is a leader in the sun, spray and spa industry, I highly admired their business model and knew my current locations would benefit in joining the industry leader.
4. What was your life like before iTAN Franchising, Inc.?
Prior to joining the iTAN family, I wore all the hats; I did it all. From promotions and marketing to client relations and technical support, I was responsible for every aspect of my business. I wouldn’t trade the experience I gained from tackling and completing all the ins and outs required; I was married to every aspect of my business. Let’s face it, I’m not an expert in all these areas. iTAN not only provides guidance and support, but they also have experts on their team in each of the areas required to operate your business at the highest level.
5. What was the process like for opening a franchise with iTAN Franchising Inc.? Describe your experience.
My experience may look a little different than others, as I had been on my own and making my own decisions for as long as I can remember. So naturally, I experienced nervousness and apprehension as I prepared to walk into the doors of what used to be my competitor.
During my first meeting with the members of iTAN Franchising, Inc., I instantly felt like family. I am completely supported, my voice is heard and I am amongst others who all fully support each other in consistently delivering the best to all our guests.
6. How much business knowledge should you have when opening a franchise? Did iTAN Franchising, Inc. assist you with making business decisions, etc.?
I think business knowledge is very important when running a business, as I believe operating any business requires business knowledge. However, people from different backgrounds and experience levels can have success owning and operating a franchise.
iTAN Franchising, Inc. is extremely helpful in every aspect of operating your franchise, but I find them even more helpful in assisting in areas you may not have as much experience in or areas in which you may need advice and guidance. iTAN Franchising, Inc. was able to assist me right away with business operations as well as lease negotiations to ensure my locations are set up for success.
7. How did your career and/or personal life change now that you own a franchise?
As a mother of three young children, owning a business can be stressful and demanding yet very rewarding. Owning a franchise has given me the balance to do what I love while giving me the opportunity to share time with my children and family.
8. What advice would you give to someone looking into franchising?
The support and guidance you receive from your franchisor is crucial. Learn how to operate your business from top to bottom. Work the counter, mop the floors and do everything it takes to keep your business open for years to come.
