Just because summer is coming to an end doesn’t mean your days of glowing skin are over. No matter the season, a spray tan can help you glow up anytime, anywhere. If you’re a spray tan newbie, don’t fret! We came up with the 8 things you need to know before getting your first spray tan.
1. Spray tans last about a week
How long a spray tan lasts can vary from person to person, but one session will typically last about five to seven days. We recommend coming in on Mystic Mondays at iTAN to take advantage of $15 spray tans. You can choose from the Mystic Tan or the VersaSpa. For special occasions, try our custom Airbrush for a natural, flawless color that will last up to 10 days!
2. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate
It’s best to exfoliate your skin during the days leading up to your spray tan in order to take off any dead skin cells. Exfoliating is key, but don’t do it the day of! Smooth, exfoliated skin will allow the spray solution to adhere to the skin better for a more even glow.
3. Fresh faced is best
We recommend taking off all face makeup prior to your spray tan session. Makeup can act as a barrier to the spray solution, making it harder for the color to stick.
4. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
Naturally drier parts of your skin will absorb more spray solution. We suggest using a barrier cream, available and provided at all iTAN locations, on your hands, feet, elbows and knees so they don’t get too dark. Barrier creams can also be used in small areas, such as in between the fingers and toes, to avoid getting solution in unwanted areas.
5. Wear something loose
After a spray tan, it’s always best to wear dark, loose fitting clothing. In order to protect your newly bronzed color, avoid wearing tight clothes to prevent the spray solution from rubbing off.
6. Allow for your spray tan to develop
After your initial spray session, the solution will continue to get darker over the next eight to twelve hours. For special occasions, we recommend getting your spray tan the night before and sleeping through the night while allowing your color to develop.
7. Pat don’t rub
Once you’ve waited at least eight hours, you can finally shower but be sure to take precautions to preserve your tan. Patting your skin gently dry will give your tan the soft care it needs to stay golden longer.
8. Maintain your color
After getting a spray tan, it’s important to keep your skin moisturized. The more hydrated your skin is, the longer the color will last. To keep skin hydrated, we love using the Hemp Nation Moisturizing Tan Extender (available at iTAN). It combines a nourishing blend of hemp seed oil, shea butter and jojoba esters to achieve lusciously hydrated skin.
To preserve your tan, we recommend waiting at least eight hours before any heavy exercise or jumping in the pool.
